This design was born from my immersion in the cyclical nature of our grandmothers, our mothers mothers mothers wisdom, seven generations backwards and forwards and the cycle of passing along the teachings, strength and resplendence to descendants. The reciprocity in our bloodmemory from our deep connections to our lands to the style of stitch in my kokums beadwork. Lovingly guiding my hands and steps with clearly delineated markers.

This sunburst parfleche pattern is derived from my Nehiyaw family's traditional beadwork. The round design embodies the leadership and directionality, the sense of purpose of our grandmothers, pointing (with their lips) where we need to draw our attention; all four directions, clean ascending steps, balanced and mirroring our path forward with clear focus and surrounded unbroken by the blazing rays of their prayers and love.

Next, the dentalium element hangs represents wealth redefined passed down in their wisdom and care. Dentalium, a conical tooth shell harvested on the Pacific Coast, traded inland for thousands of years and threaded into adornment, represents the wealth of our traditional commerce, thriving trade routes and kinship ties that are being rekindled.

For me, wealth redefined is our language, health, joy, healing, our ancestral wisdom and food, healthy land and clean water outside of the narrow colonial capitalistic definitions. Wealth is the gift of holding my kokums beadwork on smoked hide in my own two hands.

Made of 3 colours of quality mirror and opaque cut acetate inlaid and leather backed with durable gold plated hypoallergenic hooks.

Hand made in Canada. Authentic Indigenous adornment.
